He is known to nightclub frequents and radio listeners as DJ Newton a.k.a. “The Funky Buddha”. His passion for entertaining crowds began in 1986 when he started as a mobile DJ in Cape Town. As a mobile entertainer with an ear for fresh funky music, he soon grew into a household name amongst party goers in the Northern Suburbs, Cape Town and later also became one of the first DJ’s in the Western Cape to play live on air from a radio station and also to play live on air from a nightclub. Even though he has vast experience in spinning music from all genres, “The Funky Buddha” has a feel for all types of House music and is famous for PROGRESSIVE HOUSE and JACKING HOUSE as his preferred genre. According to him he found his inspiration as young aspirant DJ many years ago in DJ Superfly. He also acknowledges DJ Russel and DJ Natano the most entertaining jockeys during this era. Currently DJ Newton finds his inspiration in himself and uses past experiences to determine his future in the industry. Back in the day he used to be the resident DJ and also made guest appearances at many nightclubs. Some of his most memorable stints were at Club Company, Wazup, Living Room, Club Galaxy, and Cinnamon. He also managed to create a high energy atmosphere at various events such as Kinky Afro, 411, Malibu Summer Splash, Mitchell’s Plain Festival and also currently resident DJ on THB on Heart 104.9. DJ Newton considers himself a pioneer in House music in the Western Cape with the ability to identify hit songs earlier than many others. With his expertise he manages to take any party to a peak, descend the atmosphere and build to peak again in order to keep his crowd on the dance floor to the maximum. Besides spending time behind the decks and doing event management he also operates a DJ academy where aspiring male and female jockeys are trained and moulded. Since starting this academy many success stories developed and many students transformed into DJ’s playing live on radio stations to residents at nightclubs.
